Sea of Green

Meredith had spent the warm months crossing the Relentless Mountains and now found herself in a landscape she had never experienced, she had seen the carpet of green on occasion as she traipsed through the mountain passes but that had not prepared her. Trees of green and brown covered in bark! The ground was soft and on occasion spongy, there were shrubs and bushes and flowers and mosses and fungus and insects! So many things she didn’t even possess a vocabulary for. She ran for a moment and twirled and then stopped and looked back at the mountains behind her then forward to the huge wall of green in front of her.

“Well shucks, we made it this far.” She said looking into the distance black hair blowing in a warm breeze, the tips of her pointy ears were red and beads of sweat dripped down her head, she pawed at it for a moment, “oh” she exclaimed and took off her back pack then her thick coat, it seemed she hadn’t noticed how hot it was until just then. She cursed under her breadth “Stupid Mer” and she looked back at the green and brown wall infront of her for a moment and then seemingly having made a decision she stripped down to her small clothes but put her boots back on. Then pulled a stone hatchet out of her backpack and headed towards the trees.

After some time the first sun was reaching its zenith its little red brother a quarter sky behind it and Meredith had collected a number of things, A pile of dry leaves and wood, another sturdier stick and a smaller stick and pile of stones she used those two to make a line to hang her damp clothes, and she used her thick coat to wipe the sweat off her skin, she then dropped two wild rabbits down, she made a fire and then set about skinning and gutting the rabbits. By the time she’d finished the second sun had reached its peak and the first sun was a third of the way to set. She’d finished cooking her rabbits and created a raised cot to sleep on.

“I’ll venture forth tomorrow, tonight, Ira only knows how endless this sea of green maybe.” She smiled and set about eating her rabbit.
